As you read and study this Task 2 sample, take notice of the way that connecting words are used to make the writing more coherent. This is very important in academic writing.
Modern technology has increased material wealth, but not happiness. To what extent do you agree with this suggestion?
Nowadays, people use their technological devices to show their status and wealth. For some, this brings great pride and happiness. But this is only superficial. In other words it is not long lasting happiness. I believe that despite the increase in material possessions and wealth, advanced technology doesn’t lead to a higher level of happiness.
It’s true that modern technology makes life easier. It brings convenience. For example, the modern day working woman who has to juggle children and work can organise her time better through tools such as google calendar on her smart phone. She can also put reminders on her phone so she doesn’t miss any children’s parties or work functions. This would definitely reduce her stress, but not increase her level of contentment with her life.
It’s also true that modern technology makes us feel more connected with the rest of the world. When we have good friends of close family living in other countries, we can now speak to them face to face via Skype or msn chat. This brings much laughter and comfort when we are missing our loved ones. It’s possible though, that the same feelings of comfort were experienced through the receiving of a letter in the old days. So, the argument that more advanced ways of communication have increased happiness doesn’t hold well.
In short, although modern technology has made our lives easier and brought us closer to the rest of the world, it is impossible to prove that it has brought about increased happiness.
